The European Business of the Year Award 2015 – Malta

The third edition of VIVANDA took place at MFCC from the 18th till the 21st of February 2016. VIVANDA is an International culinary event focused on Euro Mediterranean gastronomical traditions, cultures and innovations. During this culinary event hundreds of trade visitors are given the opportunity to encounter innovations in the world of food and drink.

the chefRenowned chef Martin Camilleri, was manning the only restaurant ‘The Chef Brasserie’ during the event having the restaurant open from 10:00hrs to 22:00hrs throughout. He was using various AppleCore Foods cheese and salami including brands like: Beretta, Windyridge, Castello and Italia Doc. A Beretta cheese board was given with every platter purchased.


Various chefs’ challenges were held, during which local and foreign chefs competed to win prestigious awards and accolades, all under the patronage of the World Association of Chefs Societies – WACS.

> 350 professional chefs
> 8000+ visitors over 4 days
> 50 hours of professional cooking competitions
> 320 Parade des Chefs fine dining dinners served

Educational talks and entertainment were not lacking during the whole event. Visitors could learn about new products, support the chefs competing, food tasting and also activities for kids. This made the exhibition environment more interesting and attractive to the visitors.

Hosting the Blood Donation Unit


On the 9th of February 2016, The Mobile Blood Donation Unit was stationed at Hardrocks Business Park in front of AppleCore Foods Premises between 8:30 and 13:00. AppleCore Foods offered to welcome the Unit in front of its premises and provided power supply throughout the morning.

Following the procedure for donating blood, people working at the Business Park were advised and encouraged to give blood during those hours. There was a good turnout of people on that day making the event a successful one.blood transfusion

Jonathan Dalli, Managing Director at the Concept Stadium, the boutique marketing consultancy firm that organised the initiative, explained that “This is what Corporate Social Responsibility is truly about. It’s not just about talking about it, or promoting it, but actually doing it. We’re extremely grateful for everyone’s support and it’s great to see so many companies from various industries within the Hardrocks Business Park coming together. We encourage other business hubs to follow suit.”

Maltese chefs visit Menù and Canuti facilities

A group of Maltese chefs left Malta for a familiarisation visit at the Menù and Canuti production facilities in Italy. The Maltese delegation is led by Pierre Mattocks, CEO at AppleCore Foods and Antoinette Stellini, Applecore Foods’ Director of Sales.

The primary aim of this visit is to help the Maltese chefs get a more in depth knowledge of over 450 products that are produced within the Menù production facility in Barbieri in Cavezzo (province of Modena). This state-of-the-art facility covers over 30,000 square metres, and the Maltese chefs are also being given demonstrations on how to prepare impressive dishes using the Menù products. The visit is being hosted by Menu’s Commercial Director, Export Director and Export Manager.

Menù started off as salami producers in the 1930s but since then the company developed a wide range of products that are now used in restaurants, cafés, bars, pubs, sandwich shops, and similar establishments worldwide.

The group’s next stop was at Canuti’s production facility in Rimini where the company has been producing top quality pasta products since the 1950s. The group of Maltese chefs were first taken on a tour around the pasta factory which was followed by a detailed presentation on Canuti’s flagship products, including some mouth-watering recipes.

Pink for October initiative by AppleCore Foods

October is synonymous with breast cancer awareness, and this year AppleCore Foods took the initiative of inviting their female staff to undergo breast imaging / breast screening.

As part of the Pink for October drive, AppleCore Foods is sponsoring breast imaging and screening for all female staff members.

AppleCore’s sales director, Antoinette Stellini, stressed on the importance of such efforts “As one might already know, an ultrasound is recommended for women under the age of 40 years, whereas a mammogram is recommended to ladies over 40 years old. We thought of supporting our female members of staff to take such precautionary measures as we firmly believe in a holistic development and care of our staff”.

San Carlo Crisps lovers win €500 in cash

The San Carlo Says Facebook Competition, organised by food & beverage importers and distributors AppleCore Foods Ltd, came to an end as Jacob Cachia and Hilton Malta Executive Chef Joseph Vella both received the news that they are the lucky winners of €500 in cash each.

But the story doesn’t end there! Both Chef Joseph Vella and Jacob Cachia donated their winnings to Ursuline Sisters Crèche in Sliema.

“That was the aim of the photo all along. We wanted to enter the San Carlo Says competition as a fun way to come together as a team for a good cause. Thank you AppleCore Foods for giving us the opportunity, other companies should follow suit!”, said Joseph Vella in a brief comment.

The sentiment was echoed by Jacob Cachia who garnered the highest number of votes in the competition. “Thanks to San Carlo, someone in need will be benefitting from necessary care, and I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank the organisers for this fun incentive”, added Jacob Cachia. Jacob also received a personalised chef’s jacket from Chef Joseph Vella with Chef Jacob embroidered on it.

Chris Zammit Lupi, Brand Manager at AppleCore Foods added, “What a fun competition! We received so many photos of people enjoying their favourite crisps. San Carlo has quickly become a brand we enjoy in our relaxing moments with family and friends, and the Facebook competition was a true reflection of that”.

AppleCore Foods nominated for JDE Professional Export Partner of the Year Award 2015

AppleCore Foods Ltd regarded as a highly valued partner showing growth in net sales and growth of cup volume. 

Jacobs Douwe Egberts Professional, the global coffee & tea company, have nominated AppleCore Foods Ltd, a local food and beverage importer and distributor, to the prestigious JDE Professional Export Partner of the Year Award 2015.

The nomination comes as AppleCore Foods Ltd, showed growth in net sales and cup volume in the past year until June 2015.

Referring to AppleCore Foods Ltd as “a highly valued partner”, Elliot Andrews, Director at JDE Professional said, “It has been a privilege to work with such a successful partner and I feel confident that AppleCore Foods Ltd will continue this growth in the next year. Congratulations on this nomination!”

There are three nominees in category II and the final winner will be announced during the Awards Dinner at this year’s Partner Event in Cape Town, South Africa.

AppleCore Foods presents donation to Puttinu Cares

All proceeds from the 2015 Arla National Pizza Challenge have been matched by AppleCore Foods

Puttinu Cares were presented with a generous donation from AppleCore Foods, after the successful 2015 Arla National Pizza Challenge wrapped.

The entrance fees from participants have been matched by AppleCore Foods, part of it’s CSR efforts for 2015.

“The Arla National Pizza Challenge brought together a number of professional chefs and a collaboration of aspiring chefs from the Institute of Tourism, to compete for the best skills in pizza-making. There was a great buzz during the competition and to be able to top that with a contribution to Puttinu Cares fills us with much satisfaction.

Top Pizzaioli face-off at the Arla Mozzarella Pizza Challenge 2015

Chefs compete to win a professional pizza course at the Accademia Pizzaioli in Italy

The Arla Mozzarella Malta Pizza Challenge is the first of its kind in Malta, seeking to award the top pizzaiolo on the Maltese Islands by bringing together over 25 chefs to compete in a culinary showdown of technique, skill, style and creativity.

1-3The competition, consisting a junior group and a separate group for professionals, took place between the 29th and 31st May at Melita Gardens in Balzan.

Contestants were given 30 minutes to impress the judges with 4 pizzas each: a classica, a calzone, a focaccia and a mystery pizza. The mystery pizza provided contestants with the opportunity to combine the traditional principles of pizza baking with their own creative taste combinations.

International judges Mr. Adriano Tona (Accademia Pizzaioli), Mr. Tomasso Ruggieri (Head Chef Menu Srl) and Mr. Jeppe Gammelby (Arla Foods amba) critically evaluated and scored each step in the pizza making process. This entailed the preparation, baking, taste and visual presentation of the pizzas. The overall hygiene of the contestants’ workstations was also evaluated.

Matthew Faenza received the award for the Most Promising Pizzaiolo in the junior group, which was made up entirely of ITS students. Following in second place was Chloe Crossly and in third place Luke Ellul.

Giuseppe De Luca was proven to be the true champion of the day. Not only did he take home the title of the Top Pizzaiolo in the professionals group, but also claimed 2nd place for his Classica, Focaccia and Mystery Pizza. The win entitled Giuseppe De Luca to the grand prize of a professional pizza course at the acclaimed Accademia Pizzaioli in Italy, including flights and accommodation. The runner up, Isaac Cocker, also claimed first prize for his Classica and Dennis Buttigieg, the 2nd runner up, for his Mystery Pizza.

Speaking at the end of the event, Antoinette Stellini, Director of Sales at AppleCore Foods said “We’re glad that this first edition of the Arla Mozzarella Malta Pizza Challenge has been an all-round success, giving local pizzaioli the opportunity to compete in a professional competition. Following the encouraging feedback we received, we plan to host the challenge as a national annual calendar event. We invite all chefs, aspiring or professional to participate.”

The next challenge will take place in the last week of May 2016. All proceeds from the entrance fees for this event are being donated to Puttinu Cares.
